What does it take to want a better life?Ashes has been a slave to a cruel master for as long as she can remember, her Name separated from her body and her life on the surface wiped away with it. Now, trapped underground for many years, she's given up hope for anything more than simply living to see the next day.
But when Ashes is swept into the growing abolitionist movement, she is forced to face the possibility of wanting something more than the life she's resigned herself to. The abolitionists have been smuggling slaves out of the tunnels for years, and Ashes is their next target for freedom. Still, leaving the tunnels isn't as simple as believing it's possible. Her master doesn't want to lose their slave and will do whatever they can to keep Ashes in the tunnels … even if that means killing her and everyone she's come to love. |
